China Advocates for Tech Self-Reliance Amid US Scrutiny of Huawei

ChinaChina Advocates for Tech Self-Reliance Amid US Scrutiny of Huawei

China’s Foreign Ministry has voiced strong opposition against the US for its alleged use of state power in targeting Chinese firms, particularly tech giant Huawei. This followed reports that the US started an investigation into Chinese-manufactured chips in Huawei’s latest smartphone releases.

Huawei’s latest smartphones garnered immense attention on their pre-sale day, swiftly selling out and reigniting discussions on the advanced tech the company has implemented. This has not only reverberated in China but also sent ripples through international markets, notably the US. There, officials appear to be tightening their scrutiny on the company.

Chinese tech analysts argue that the success of Huawei, especially its increasing appeal in the domestic market, underlines the inefficacy of unilateral sanctions. The prevailing sentiment among experts is a call for global collaboration rather than aggressive crackdowns.

Mao Ning Speaks Out

During a routine press briefing, Mao Ning, a representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, addressed the US’s official investigation into the Chinese-manufactured chip found in Huawei’s newest phones.

Mao stated, “We are against the politicization of trade and technology and condemn the overuse and misuse of the ‘national security’ concept. The actions by the US against Chinese firms go against free trade principles and international commerce regulations.”

Adding emphasis, Mao said that such actions from the US “will not halt China’s progress. They will only reinforce China’s determination and enhance our ability to become self-reliant and technologically advanced.”

Speculations surrounding the chips in Huawei’s new smartphones have ignited debate, especially in the US, where numerous politicians have amplified their calls for further sanctions against the company.

Huawei’s Resounding Success Amid Scrutiny

Despite the political heat, Huawei’s latest smartphone launches have been a roaring success. Phones like the Mate X5 and the new Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro models sold out almost instantly after their release.

There’s widespread conjecture that the Mate 60 series uses the Kirin 9000S chip with cutting-edge 7nm technology and features the HarmonyOS. Though Huawei has not disclosed details about the chips used, media reports suggest similarities between the tech in the Mate X5 and the Mate 60 series.

The launch garnered massive attention on Chinese social media platforms. The buzz around the launch hasn’t been missed by US officials either. Many are approaching the new products with a skeptical lens, pondering if US technology was in any way utilized. The US Commerce Department, having placed numerous restrictions on Huawei and the broader Chinese chip industry in recent years, expressed its intent to further inspect the 7-nanometer processor found in the Mate 60 Pro, as per Bloomberg’s report.

This development has incited discussions in Washington regarding the effectiveness of measures aimed at limiting China’s tech expansion.

Furthermore, some Western media outlets reported an increase in restrictions on iPhone usage by government personnel. Amid rising tensions between China and the US, concerns loom over the potential impact on US tech firms with significant exposure to China.

Mao responded to these claims, emphasizing China’s open-market approach: “We welcome products and services from any nation, provided they adhere to Chinese laws.” He contrasted China’s stance with countries that use ‘security’ as a pretext to undermine Chinese enterprises.

In light of this, there’s been a media buzz about the competition between Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series and Huawei’s new releases.

Experts Advocate for Cooperation Over Confrontation

The recent success of Huawei’s phone launch and the company’s confident demeanor indicate that both the company and its supply chain are prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead. Ma Jihua, a Beijing-based industry analyst, noted, “The US’s evident discontent is a glaring sign that their strategies against Chinese firms have faltered.”

Ma further highlighted the evolving trend where such sanctions have led Chinese companies to decrease dependency on the US and innovate independently.

The most effective way forward for the US would be to eschew zero-sum approaches and embrace collaboration, ensuring mutual benefits. Current US measures negatively impact American businesses, a sentiment echoed by some industry insiders in the US.

John Neuffer, leading the US Semiconductor Industry Association, opined that no nation can single-handedly control the chip supply chain and that the semiconductor industry greatly benefits from its relationship with China.

In summary, as tensions between China and the US continue to rise over technology and trade, Huawei stands at the center of the storm. Its recent successes have bolstered China’s arguments for tech self-reliance, even as debates about global cooperation versus crackdowns continue.
