Honoring Youthful Talent: A Glance at the 14th Lu Xun Teenagers Literature Award in Hong Kong
Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region – Amidst the ornate backdrop of the Hong Kong Palace Museum this past Saturday, the literary and artistic zeal of the youth from China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was on full display. The city, renowned for its vibrant juxtaposition of the old and the new, witnessed the culmination of the 14th Lu Xun Teenagers Literature Award, an initiative carrying forward the legacy of the eminent 20th-century Chinese writer, Lu Xun.
In this grand event, 15 outstanding teenagers received the top honor in a competition that saw an overwhelming participation from the youth. But it wasn’t just about individual accomplishments. Educational institutions and guiding educators too had their moments under the spotlight. A commendable 25 schools were recognized for being the hubs of active participation. Simultaneously, 28 exemplary teachers were honored as the guiding lights for these young talents, receiving accolades for their role as the best instructors.
Diverse Categories, Inclusive Participation
Ensuring that the diverse talents of Hong Kong’s students were adequately represented, this year’s contest was divided into two main categories: composition and calligraphy. The primary and secondary school students from the region were invited to showcase their talent, giving an avenue for both literary and artistic expressions to shine.
In an encouraging move to embrace the multicultural essence of the city and promote the Chinese language amongst non-native speakers, the organizing committee introduced a new segment. A non-native language group was specifically established, giving an opportunity for non-Chinese teenagers to immerse themselves in the beauty and intricacies of the Chinese language and script.
The response was overwhelming. The composition category received a staggering 1,263 entries, while the calligraphy category wasn’t far behind, with 1,039 entries. The sheer numbers were a testament to the enthusiasm and eagerness of the youth to engage with their cultural roots and express their thoughts and artistic flair.
The Legacy of Lu Xun
The significance of this award transcends mere recognition of young talent. It is a nod to China’s rich literary history and the timeless legacy of Lu Xun. Initiated by his son, Zhou Haiying, in 2009, this award serves as a beacon, illuminating the path for the younger generation to imbibe the spirit of Lu Xun, who was not just a writer but a reformist, a critic, and a visionary.
Zhou Lingfei, the eldest grandson of Lu Xun and the chairman and secretary-general of the Lu Xun Culture Foundation, graced the event. His words reverberated with pride and hope. Lingfei commended the participants’ spirit of exploration, their tenacity, and their commitment to pushing boundaries. He voiced his optimism about the future, expecting even more remarkable contributions from Hong Kong’s youth, thus emphasizing the boundless potential they hold.
A New Chapter Begins
A unique facet of this year’s award ceremony was the foundation of a new student association. Comprising budding writers and artists, this body aims to be a crucible for literary creation and cultural exchanges. The members, having experienced the award’s selection process firsthand, are now poised to be ambassadors of art and literature, fostering dialogues and collaborations across boundaries.
To commemorate the past successes and provide a glimpse into the future’s promise, a selection of award-winning works from the years 2021 to 2023 was unveiled. These works, a mix of prose, poetry, and artistic impressions, encapsulate the myriad emotions, thoughts, and aspirations of the youth, offering readers and viewers a journey into their world.
The 14th Lu Xun Teenagers Literature Award was not just an event; it was a celebration. A celebration of talent, determination, and the indomitable spirit of the youth. As Hong Kong continues to be a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and innovations, it’s heartening to see initiatives like these nurturing and recognizing the next generation’s voices.
