In the bustling city of Hong Kong, a remarkable story of compassion and creativity has captured the attention of the global quilting community. Josianne Robb, a Hong Kong-based quilt maker, found herself facing a dilemma: her apartment was becoming overrun with scrap fabric, a cherished component of the craft she has wholeheartedly embraced for over two decades. Determined to find a sustainable solution and make a positive impact, Robb embarked on a mission to create 175 quilts for the residents of the renowned Po Leung Kuk orphanage.
Robb’s journey began with a revelation – a realization that her overflowing stash of fabric needed to be put to good use. With limited storage space and a deep commitment to sustainability, she resolved to embark on a “fibre diet,” vowing not to acquire any new fabric until her existing collection was depleted. It was during this time that the idea of creating Christmas gift quilts for the children and teenagers at Po Leung Kuk orphanage took shape in her mind.
Initially believing she needed to make 40 quilts, Robb soon discovered that the actual number was a staggering 175. Undeterred by the challenge, she remained resolute in her determination to ensure that no child or teenager at the orphanage would miss out on receiving a quilt. Eager to enlist the support of fellow quilting enthusiasts, Robb took to social media, sharing her project details on LinkedIn and Instagram, and appealing for assistance. The response she received was nothing short of overwhelming.
From the far reaches of the Netherlands to the serene landscapes of New Zealand, quilters around the world heeded Robb’s call, offering their own handmade creations to contribute to the cause. Overjoyed and deeply moved by the kindness and compassion displayed by strangers, Robb found herself surrounded by a network of nearly 50 volunteers who collectively pledged to create 125 quilts. As of now, 29 quilts have already been completed, bringing hope and comfort to the children and teenagers who await their arrival.
These quilts, crafted with love and care by individuals across the globe, will find their new homes within the walls of Po Leung Kuk orphanage during the highly anticipated Hong Kong Cricket Club‘s annual Christmas party in December. The festive atmosphere will be further enhanced by the warmth and joy that these quilts will undoubtedly bring to the hearts of the recipients.
Through her determination to tackle her fabric surplus sustainably and her unwavering commitment to brightening the lives of the children and teenagers at Po Leung Kuk, Josianne Robb has not only ignited a global quilting movement but also provided a shining example of how a simple act of creativity and kindness can have far-reaching effects. As studies have shown, quilting possesses numerous benefits, ranging from boosting mental health to warding off cognitive decline. Robb herself attests to the transformative power of the craft, stating, “When I’m quilting, I’m in the zone.”
In a world often plagued by division and uncertainty, the collaborative efforts of these quilters stand as a testament to the beauty of unity and compassion. They remind us that, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, the human spirit has the capacity to create something extraordinary, one stitch at a time.
