An immersive exploration of the life of the legendary Chinese poet Su Dongpo will come alive in a new dance drama soon to premiere. The China Oriental Performing Arts Group (COPAG), known for their successful production of “Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting,” will debut their latest modern dance drama, “Shiyi Dongpo,” or “Poet Dongpo.” The premiere is slated for July 22-23 at the Shanghai Cultural Square.
“Shiyi Dongpo” provides an in-depth perspective on Chinese classical philosophy and aesthetics, showcasing traditional practices through a modern lens. The dance drama will integrate a myriad of Chinese cultural elements, including music, dance, poetry, paintings, calligraphy, stone carving, traditional Chinese operas, martial arts, and guqin – an ancient stringed instrument. Fifteen of Su’s artistic masterpieces will be brought to life on stage, serving as vibrant backdrops to the unfolding narrative.
A troupe of over 20 performers from COPAG will work in harmony with internationally renowned dancers to depict various facets of Su Dongpo’s life. From embodying the highs and lows of human existence to encapsulating his optimistic and expansive worldview, the performances will resonate with his timeless ethos.
This spectacle is the brainchild of celebrated choreographer, dancer, painter, and visual artist Shen Wei, who is renowned for his work choreographing the opening segment, “Scroll,” at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Ceremony.
Su Dongpo, also known as Su Shi, remains one of the most influential cultural figures in Chinese history. He was not just a poet but also a revered scholar, prose-writer, painter, calligrapher, and statesman. He is globally recognized for his contributions, with French newspaper Le Monde naming him as one of the 12 world heroes who lived around the year 1000, the sole Chinese figure to hold this honor.
The China Oriental Performing Arts Group, originating from the fusion of the Central Song and Dance Troupe established in 1952 and the Oriental Song and Dance Troupe formed in 1962, has a rich history of creating critically acclaimed cultural and artistic works. Among their esteemed productions are “The Splendor of China,” “Dance and Music Chinese Stories – Twelve Chinese Zodiacs,” and “Teacher Guimei,” highlighting their prowess in delivering captivating performances that blend traditional and contemporary elements of Chinese culture.
