“Hidden Narratives”: Celebrating Resilience of Hong Kong’s Domestic Helpers

CultureArt"Hidden Narratives": Celebrating Resilience of Hong Kong's Domestic Helpers

At the renowned Lumenvisum arts space, situated in the heart of Shek Kip Mei in Hong Kong, Gretchen So is engrossed in the final preparations. The walls around her tell stories, with photos that are vivid and pulsating with energy.

Titled “Hidden Narratives: Portraits of Resilience in Hong Kong’s Migrant Domestic Helper Community”, this exhibition stands out not just for its visual appeal but also for its profound message. Through each photograph, So brings to light the untold stories of a community that has quietly been the backbone of many households in the city.

Hong Kong is home to an estimated 340,000 domestic helpers. Most of these individuals come from countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, journeying thousands of miles, driven by the promise of a better life. The sheer number indicates their significance, yet their personal sacrifices often go unnoticed. Many of these workers have made heart-wrenching decisions, leaving behind their own families, especially their children, to provide care for others in a foreign land.

Their roles are diverse. While some are entrusted with the responsibility of looking after children, shaping their upbringing and becoming secondary parental figures, others dedicate their time to maintaining households, ensuring they remain pristine. Another segment provides compassionate care to the elderly, offering companionship and support in the twilight years of their lives.

Gretchen So’s exhibition is a celebration of this community. She not only acknowledges the challenges these helpers face daily but also highlights their unwavering spirit and resilience. Their stories, often overshadowed, are brought to the forefront, showcasing their invaluable contributions to Hong Kong society. It’s a timely reminder of the human stories behind the city’s bustling scenes.

With “Hidden Narratives”, So aspires to spark conversations, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the migrant domestic helper community in Hong Kong. It’s a tribute to their sacrifices, their resilience, and most importantly, their unyielding spirit.
