CultureJay Chou Partners with Universal Music Group for Global Expansion

Universal Music Greater China (UMGC), a division of the world-renowned Universal Music Group (UMG), recently announced a landmark deal with Jay Chou, the celebrated “King of Mandopop,” and his record label, JVR Music. This significant agreement entrusts UMG with the global marketing and distribution rights for Chou’s music and upcoming projects. The partnership also aims to boost the careers of emerging artists from JVR Music, such as Patrick Brasca and Young (Cao Yang).

Jay Chou, who achieved the distinction of being the top-selling album artist globally in 2022, now joins UMG’s impressive roster of artists. UMG’s commitment to this deal underscores its strategic intent to amplify the reach and influence of Mandopop music on a global scale.

Timothy Xu, the head of Universal Music Greater China, expressed great pride in welcoming Chou to the UMG family. “This collaboration is not merely a significant milestone for us but also a celebration of Jay’s extraordinary talent and global appeal. We are immensely honored to be custodians of his musical legacy and are committed to introducing his artistry to a broader global audience,” Xu stated.

Jay Chou has been a dominant force in the Mandarin music industry since his debut album “JAY” was released in 2000. Over his illustrious career, he has produced 15 albums. His 2022 album, “Greatest Works of Art,” marked a significant achievement in the Mandopop genre. Chou became the first Mandarin artist to secure a spot in the top 10 of the IFPI Global Artist Chart and the first to top the Global Album Sales Chart.

Adam Granite, Executive Vice President of Market Development at Universal Music Group, also shared his enthusiasm for the deal. “We are thrilled to have Jay Chou and JVR Music join our global family. This partnership represents both a strategic and cultural triumph. It aligns perfectly with our mission to support diverse talents and introduce them to global audiences. Jay’s unparalleled talent, coupled with JVR’s creative prowess, complements our vision of enriching the global music landscape.”

In addition to his singing career, Chou is renowned as a prolific songwriter and producer, having crafted all of his songs, often in collaboration with famed lyricist Vincent Fang. Since 2013, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), UMG’s premier global publishing division, has managed the publishing rights for Chou and JVR Music, overseeing their extensive catalog of songs.

The partnership between Jay Chou and Universal Music Group is a pivotal moment in the music industry, signifying a bridge between East and West in the music world. It not only highlights Chou’s remarkable achievements in Mandopop but also UMG’s dedication to promoting musical diversity and global connectivity. This alliance is set to propel Mandopop to new heights, expanding its influence and accessibility to music enthusiasts worldwide. As Chou’s unique blend of traditional Chinese melodies with contemporary music styles reaches new ears, it fosters a deeper appreciation for the richness and versatility of Mandopop music.
