“Skylight” – A Riveting Theatrical Experience by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre

The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre has recently presented an exceptional production of the acclaimed play “Skylight,” captivating audiences with its dual-city performances in Beijing and Shanghai. “Skylight,” originally penned by esteemed British playwright and director David Hare in 1995, is a profound exploration of love intertwined with social values, a narrative that has resonated deeply with audiences globally. The play’s notable achievements include winning the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award.

Set against the backdrop of a cold London night, “Skylight” weaves the intricate story of Tom, a successful restaurateur, and his former lover, Kyra, a high school teacher. The plot unfolds as Tom seeks to rekindle their past relationship, navigating the complexities arising from their vastly different worlds and values.

In the Chinese version of “Skylight,” the character of Tom is brought to life by Yang Yi, a nationally celebrated actor and recipient of the 17th Shanghai Magnolia Award for Best Actor. Yang’s portrayal adds depth and nuance to the character, making the play not just a poignant love story but also a reflection of contemporary social dynamics. “Skylight” is particularly poignant in its depiction of how the destinies of individuals are shaped by their personal values, mirroring the social reality of the time when entrepreneurs were lauded as societal benchmarks, overshadowing professions dedicated to public service.

Since July 7, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre has been showcasing eight of its plays in Beijing, continuing for five months.
