Johnny Depp’s Tarot-Inspired Art Collection Pays Tribute to Vanessa Paradis

CultureArtJohnny Depp's Tarot-Inspired Art Collection Pays Tribute to Vanessa Paradis

Actor Johnny Depp has drawn inspiration from tarot iconography for his latest art collection, which includes a tribute to his former partner, French actor and singer Vanessa Paradis. The collection, titled “Tarot,” features four pieces: “The Lovers,” “The Empress,” “The Emperor,” and “Strength,” each reflecting tarot card imagery. The collection will be available for purchase starting Thursday.

“I’ve always been tremendously curious about the tarot,” Depp shared in a video. “There’s a great art to the cards themselves, dating back to forever ago and the unseen art of reading the cards.”

“The Lovers” portrays a well-dressed couple, with the male figure holding a red rose. “The Empress,” featuring a female figure adorned with a weathered crown, pays homage to Paradis, with whom Depp spent 14 years before their separation in 2012. They share two children, and Depp has expressed that they have remained “very close.”

“Strength” depicts a contemplative elephant with the inscription: “Why do you want to fight with something that doesn’t want to fight with you?” This piece was inspired by a painting Depp created when Paradis was pregnant. “The Emperor,” characterized by an eyeless figure with made-up red lips, evokes a 17th-century French monarch. This piece was inspired by a work Depp produced while filming “Jeanne du Barry,” in which he portrayed King Louis XV in Versailles.

The movie, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, marked Depp’s first major role since his high-profile defamation trial against his ex-wife, actor Amber Heard, in 2022.

Depp’s “Tarot” series is limited to 195 editions and is priced at $4,500 for each individual framed piece. The collection will be sold by British art retailer Castle Fine Art. This series follows Depp’s previous art collections and showcases his continued exploration of creative expression beyond his acting career.

Each piece in the “Tarot” collection reflects Depp’s fascination with the rich history and artistic value of tarot cards. The series not only highlights his artistic talent but also his personal connections and experiences, offering a glimpse into the actor’s introspective journey.

The “Tarot” collection is expected to attract considerable interest from both art collectors and fans of Depp, given its unique inspiration and the personal tributes embedded within the works. As the collection becomes available, it offers an opportunity for admirers to own a piece of Depp’s artistic vision and personal narrative.
