New Publications Offer Diverse Perspectives on China’s Global Role and Internal Developments

CultureBooksNew Publications Offer Diverse Perspectives on China's Global Role and Internal Developments

A wave of new books and publications has recently emerged, offering multifaceted insights into China’s evolving international economic engagement, its domestic legal frameworks, technological advancements, and its broader societal transformations. These works delve into China’s influence on global order, its unique approach to information access, its leadership in high-speed rail, and its impact on global change.

China’s Evolving Role in the International Economic Order

Professor Kevin Gallagher of Boston University, along with Gregory T. Chin, has co-authored “China and the International Economic Order” with Cambridge University Press. This open-access book examines China’s dynamic relationship with the Bretton Woods institutions (IMF and World Bank) from the 1980s to the present. The authors propose that China has transitioned from being a “rule-taker” to a “rule-shaker” and ultimately a “rule-maker” outside these institutions, employing a strategy of “two-way countervailing power.” This engagement has spurred reforms within the existing global order while also eliciting reactions, particularly from the United States.

Freedom of Information and Legal Evolution in China

Western Illinois University Professor Yong Tang’s new book, “Freedom of Information Law in China: From Imperial Court Diaries to Open Government Information Regulations,” explores the historical trajectory of government secrecy and openness in China. Tang traces the origins of China’s first national freedom of information law, highlighting influences from imperial records and the adoption of foreign FOI laws. The book argues for a long history of mutual learning between Chinese and Western legal traditions, offering a perspective largely untold in Western discourse.

Technological Prowess: China’s High-Speed Rail

A comprehensive bilingual book, “China’s High-Speed Railway,” has been released, detailing the development and achievements of China’s extensive high-speed rail network. The publication covers engineering, manufacturing, operations, and safety, showcasing China’s journey to becoming a global leader in this sector. With over 48,000 kilometers of operational track, China’s high-speed rail accounts for more than 70 percent of the world’s total mileage and connects 97 percent of its cities with populations over 500,000. The book also highlights China’s role in shaping international rail standards.

Broader Societal and Global Impact

“China Changes Everything: Observations on Global Change,” a compilation of articles by over 30 activist authors and published by World View Forum, was recently launched in New York City. The book explores how China is transforming social and economic life for a significant portion of the world’s population and its solidarity with developing nations. Additionally, the Consulate General of China in Chicago hosted a book launch for “West Meets East: 100 American Secondary School Students’ Tales About China,” celebrating the literary contributions of young American students and fostering inter-school collaborations between China and the U.S.
