The “A Hundred Craftsmen across the Taiwan Straits” event was recently launched in Jinan, East China’s Shandong Province, marking a significant step in promoting cross-Straits cultural exchanges. This exhibition provides a platform for artisans to share their insights into various traditional handicrafts, fostering the development of Chinese handicrafts at large.

This event is a collaborative effort by the Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao Affairs Office of the Shandong Provincial Government, Shandong Cross-Straits Economic and Cultural Development Promotion Association, Shandong Federation of Trade Unions Exchange Center, Shandong Wuji Culture and Art Exchange Center, and Shandong Management University.

Notably displayed is the “Same Roots” cup, a testament to the cultural ties that bind communities across the Taiwan Straits. This piece, crafted from clay from both the Yellow River in Shandong and Nantou in Taiwan, symbolizes the shared cultural heritage and strong interpersonal connections between the regions.

Shandong Intangible Cultural Heritage master, Liu Xuanzi, shared that the event aims to infuse traditional Chinese culture with innovative methods, ensuring its survival and relevance in modern society while amplifying its impact. An exclusive exhibition featuring handicraft works from both sides of the Taiwan Straits will be held in the future.

Meanwhile, in the theatrical realm, the drama “Jingmeng,” centering around traditional Chinese opera performers, is set to be performed at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on Friday. Renowned Chinese comedian Chen Peisi directs the drama, which narrates the resilient journey of a Kunqu Opera troupe from East China’s Jiangsu Province navigating their destinies amid war’s aftermath.

Since its premiere in 2021, “Jingmeng” has garnered critical acclaim from audiences, securing an impressive rating of 9.4/10 on Chinese review platform Douban. The play’s scriptwriter, Yu Yue, stated, “The audience is smart, and they deserve respect instead of being toyed with,” highlighting the importance of genuine storytelling.
