CultureArtWilson Fung: From Hobby to Career in Transforming Rundown Properties

Hong Kong-based Wilson Fung has carved out a reputation for transforming dilapidated properties into aesthetically pleasing and comfortable homes. Initially a hobby, this passion for renovation has recently led him to a new career trajectory as a contract design consultant for Leadfaith Design Engineering, the company he originally hired for his first real estate revamp 20 years ago.

Fung’s latest achievement is a refurbished three-storey villa located in Sai Kung, in Hong Kong’s New Territories. The 1,800 sq ft property, purchased in 2021, was meticulously transformed over 18 months. “Each house dictates its own style and I explore how to bring out its best assets,” Fung notes. With its abundant trees and greenery, the villa reminded him of Bali, shaping the aesthetic direction of his renovations.

Fung commenced the revamp by focusing on the garden. Teaming up with tree surgeons, he altered the surrounding foliage to optimize daylight reception and maximize the view. The resultant transformation revealed a stunning vista of Hebe Haven.

The once overgrown garden was replaced with a breakfast nook, poolside lounging space, a sunken conversation pit, and dining terraces towards the rear of the house. These changes demanded significant knowledge about landscaping and complex drainage solutions.

As for the interior, apart from the stainless-steel staircase, everything was stripped back to a shell. The living, dining, and kitchen areas were combined, with bi-fold doors installed to seamlessly connect with the garden. Strategic use of floor-to-ceiling mirrors enhanced the indoor space, making it appear larger and the garden more expansive.

Fung credits lighting as one of the most crucial elements in home design. His love for LED lights and feature lights can be seen throughout the villa, creating varying mood levels. The villa is also adorned with his eclectic art collection, with gallery-style descriptions hung next to each piece.

Fung’s personal ‘man cave’ on the first floor exemplifies his ingenuity. The cozy library-cum-office-cum-music-room-cum-gym is a bedroom-turned-multifunctional space, featuring an Oscar Law‘s painting, Black Lady, that simultaneously serves as a focal point and conceals messy shelves.

Fung’s passion for wallpaper is evident in the living room alcoves and the main bedroom, where the Changing Tides mural from 17 Patterns enhances the room’s seaside feel. Fung’s work is a testament to his commitment to exploring the potential of each space, be it a dining area, bathroom, or guest bedroom.

Although currently content, Fung hints at future projects, continuing his journey of transforming rundown properties into visually stunning and comfortable homes.
