K-Pop Sensation NCT Dream Incorporates MBTI Personality Test in New Album

CultureK-Pop Sensation NCT Dream Incorporates MBTI Personality Test in New Album

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test, a tool popular among young South Koreans exploring self-discovery, has found its way into the music scene. K-pop boy band NCT Dream has embraced the MBTI phenomenon in their third full-length album, ‘ISTJ’, released on July 17.

The MBTI test categorizes people into one of 16 personality types based on introversion/extroversion, sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving dimensions. It’s now commonplace for Koreans to disclose their MBTI type as part of their self-introduction. NCT Dream, on the other hand, has gone a step further, embedding the concept into their music.

Their latest album ‘ISTJ’ highlights the intriguing dynamics between the opposing ENFP and ISTJ personality types in its title track. The song tells the tale of ENFP boys who find themselves attracted to ISTJ girls, regardless of their stark character differences. Mark, the group’s leader, notes that the concept resonated with the band as it mirrors the vibrant MBTI culture in South Korea.

Despite the MBTI theme, some band members emphasized the importance of not confining individuals to their MBTI results. Jaemin insists that the test should not be the only basis for making predictions about others. Similarly, Renjun, who has never taken the test, expressed his reluctance to judge people solely based on their MBTI types. However, band member Haechan admits to having taken the test multiple times, finding his type changes depending on his current state.

The album also features other tracks, each showcasing NCT Dream’s musical prowess. A notable song, “Like We Just Met,” is particularly cherished by the group as all members participated in writing the lyrics. The album received an impressive 4.2 million pre-orders, evidencing their growing global popularity.

Nevertheless, the band believes they are at the beginning of their journey, filled with more passion and enthusiasm than ever. They remain dedicated to their growth and strive to share their music with global audiences in innovative ways.
