Cantopop Legend Jacky Cheung Cancels Hangzhou Concerts Amid Health Concerns

CultureMusic & TheaterCantopop Legend Jacky Cheung Cancels Hangzhou Concerts Amid Health Concerns

Cantopop superstar Jacky Cheung Hok-yau has canceled three concerts in Hangzhou, China, this weekend due to inflamed vocal cords. This marks the third time the 63-year-old artist has had to cancel dates on his “Jacky Cheung 60+ World Tour” this year because of health-related issues.

Cheung previously canceled three concerts in Shanghai in March after contracting Covid-19. Last month, he withdrew from three of his nine scheduled shows in Taipei, Taiwan, just hours before the first performance due to a swollen throat caused by the respiratory syncytial virus. He managed to recover and perform from June 14 to 16 in Taipei.

Refunds for ticket holders of the Hangzhou concerts, scheduled between July 26 and 28, will be processed by the concert organizer. Alternatively, fans can retain their tickets as new dates for Hangzhou are being arranged later this year. While the Shanghai concerts have been rescheduled for October, additional performances in Taiwan are planned for 2025 to compensate for the sudden cancellations in Taipei.

In a statement released on Weibo, Cheung expressed his regret to his Hangzhou fans for the last-minute cancellation. “But the fact remains that I can’t sing for now,” the statement read. He explained that he was still suffering from nasal inflammation from a previous viral infection and inflamed vocal cords that impeded his singing ability. Despite taking plenty of rest and receiving assurances from doctors about his overall health, Cheung felt he could not perform to his standards, leading to the decision to cancel the shows.

“For me, there is only one condition: if I can perform on stage, then I will continue; if not, then I have to cancel,” Cheung wrote.

Fans have shown immense support, leaving comments on social media wishing him a speedy recovery and expressing their willingness to wait for rescheduled concerts. One user, “Bubble hot soda,” commented on Weibo, “We are OK with the postponements, we’ll wait until Hok-yau recovers well.” Another fan expressed hopes that Cheung would continue performing for decades to come, writing, “I still want to see your 70+, 80+ concerts.”

Known as the “God of Songs,” Cheung launched his current tour in Macau in June 2023 and has since performed in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Despite the setbacks, his fans remain dedicated, eagerly anticipating his return to the stage.
