Hong Kong’s summer finds its fitting finale with the return of the Shi Fu Miz music and arts festival. Set against the backdrop of the ocean, this three-day spectacle offers an immersive experience of electronic tunes, drawing from a rich tapestry of genres like techno, house, disco, funk, and breakbeat.
The festival, whose inception dates back to 2016, derives its name intriguingly from the French variant of the universally loved game, rock-paper-scissors. This creative endeavor is the brainchild of Florian Melinette, who was inspired after interacting with the Parisian DJ and event-organizing group, La Mamie’s, on Instagram during their Asia tour in 2015. Their discourse revolved around the Macki Music Festival in France, stirring Melinette’s aspiration to craft a similar musical marvel in Hong Kong. True to his vision, the inaugural Shi Fu Miz Festival unfolded on Lantau Island, less than a year after this conversation.
After taking a brief pause due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the festival is all set to enthrall audiences with its sixth edition from October 27 to 29. The serene Cheung Chau is expected to welcome an enthusiastic crowd of around 5,000 attendees.
As a nod to its reputation for featuring stellar talents, the festival will be hosted at the idyllic Saiyuen Camping Adventure Park. The stage will come alive with the pulsating rhythms of over 60 techno DJs and musicians from across continents. American techno maestros, Octave One, will be the star attraction. Sharing the limelight will be Antal Heitlager, the creative mind behind Dutch record label Rush Hour, the captivating beats of France’s Camion Bazar, Italy’s Gigi Testa, and Esa Williams, a prodigious DJ and producer based in London with South African roots.
Representing the rich musical heritage of Asia are Japan’s Soichi Terada, Mogwaa from South Korea, and the dynamic duo Bagvs and Gero from Indonesia. The ensemble is further enriched with artists from Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Local Hong Kong techno aficionados are in for a treat with over 25 of their favorite DJs, including Xiaolin, Arthur Bray, Yadin Moha, and an exhilarating takeover by Mihn Club. Celebrated Hong Kong-based music producer and Klasse Wrecks record label proprietor, Mr. Ho, expressed his excitement, not just for the festival’s impressive line-up, but also for the rare luxury of performing at home.
Beyond its musical allure, Shi Fu Miz extends its experiential offerings with a plethora of non-musical elements. Attendees can lose themselves in enchanting lighting and art installations or find solace in wellness activities encompassing yoga, meditation, breathwork, and sound healing sessions.
Melinette envisions the festival as a unique amalgamation of top-tier musical performances, well-being, sustainability, and a serene connection with nature. The promise of beachside revelry and glamping adds a touch of rustic charm, ensuring that the festival remains an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
