The Inspiring Journey of Jiang Yanchen, China’s “Folded Boy”

LifestyleThe Inspiring Journey of Jiang Yanchen, China's "Folded Boy"

Jiang Yanchen, a 19-year-old student from Shandong province, China, has become a symbol of extraordinary courage and resilience, earning the nickname “folded boy” due to his battle with ankylosing spondylitis. His condition, which caused his upper body to twist into a Z-shape, leaving his head and buttocks mere inches apart, never dampened his spirit. Jiang’s determination saw him take his high school entrance exam lying on a yoga mat, leading to his admission to Dezhou University.

Jiang’s journey has not only garnered widespread admiration online but has also led to significant medical interventions that have marked milestones in his road to recovery. In May, he was introduced to Wang Yu, the Chief Physician at the Department of Orthopedics at Peking University Hospital, who, after much deliberation and consultation with experts from various departments, agreed to undertake Jiang’s complex surgery.

The treatment plan involved two high-risk surgeries on May 25 and August 15. The first surgery was critical, with Jiang facing possible paralysis and nerve injury. However, despite initial concerns about limited limb mobility, Jiang made it through without any nerve damage. The second surgery, though anticipated to be less challenging, presented its own set of risks, including potential heart failure.

These surgeries successfully changed Jiang’s condition from a 180-degree backward fold to a 90-degree position, allowing him to sit and interact with those around him. This marked a significant improvement in his quality of life, with Jiang humorously remarking that he could finally see people in his sight.

Celebrating his 19th birthday in the hospital, Jiang expressed his optimism and readiness to embrace life’s challenges. His mother, reflecting on the momentous occasion, acknowledged the new beginning it represented for her son.

Jiang’s discharge from the hospital is just another step in his incredible journey. Future operations are planned to correct the remaining 90-degree fold. His story, documented by Peking University Health Science Centre, has touched the hearts of many, with social media users expressing admiration for Jiang’s willpower, the medical team’s skill, and the love and support of his family.

Jiang Yanchen’s story is not just one of medical triumph but a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity. His journey continues to inspire and give hope to many, demonstrating the possibilities that lie ahead when resilience and determination meet opportunity and care.
