In Nantong, Jiangsu province, a new variation of the Chinese wedding tradition of “picking up the bride” has surfaced, adding a modern twist to this long-standing custom. This innovative practice came to public attention through a video posted online, showcasing a black Porsche, adorned with wedding flowers and secured with 40 padlocks on its tires. This eye-catching ritual was performed by friends and relatives of the couple, who stipulated that “one carton of cigarettes was needed to release two locks.”
The tradition of “picking up the bride” is a pivotal element in traditional Chinese weddings, typically involving the groom partaking in various games, challenges, and rituals. These activities symbolize the groom’s commitment and love for his bride. Traditionally, the groom offers red envelopes with cash, sweets, cigarettes, and other tokens to guests as a gesture of sharing joy and inviting good fortune.
The practice of locking the wedding car, however, appears to be a contemporary addition to this ancient tradition. It has garnered attention and curiosity both from onlookers and online viewers. Some wedding industry insiders in the region claim that this practice has roots in local tradition, explaining that in the past, when economic conditions were more modest, locking the wedding car was seen as a way to attract good luck.
A local wedding planner noted that in modern times, the locks are used more for entertainment and celebration, without any serious expectation of receiving cigarettes. The groom typically gives away a few packs of cigarettes symbolically.
A county government representative affirmed that the locking of the car is meant to be in good fun and that the locks are usually removed promptly without any actual exchange of cigarettes. However, they also advised caution, suggesting that if a wedding car is unable to leave the scene, contacting the police is an option.
This updated wedding practice has sparked varied reactions online, with some embracing the creativity and others questioning the authenticity and practicality of this “tradition.” While some view it as a harmless extension of traditional customs, others see it as an unnecessary complication that could lead to unforeseen issues.
Regardless of the opinions, it’s clear that the intention behind traditional wedding celebrations remains the sharing of happiness and prosperity. However, the evolution of these customs also reflects changing social attitudes and the influence of modern lifestyles on age-old traditions.
