Veronica’s, a coffee, wine, and sandwich shop in Mumbai’s vibrant Bandra neighborhood, has quickly become a hotspot for food lovers, known for its delectable offerings and constant queue of eager customers. This small establishment is celebrated for its creative sandwiches, like the pastrami made from buffalo meat (since beef is illegal in Mumbai), piled high with pickles and served in warm milk loaf, and the indulgent smash burger, featuring a short rib and bone marrow patty with cheddar and bacon in a brioche bun. The messy, flavor-packed sandwiches are an irresistible draw for the city’s food enthusiasts.

Veronica’s was brought to life by executive chef Hussain Shahzad, a Mumbaikar with a background working alongside acclaimed chefs like Daniel Humm and Floyd Cardoz. Shahzad conceived the menu for Veronica’s during a trip back from San Francisco, inspired by international flavors and techniques while staying true to Mumbai’s food culture. The shop occupies the space of the beloved Jude Bakery, a 70-year-old institution in Bandra. For many, this connection adds a nostalgic charm, as the bakery was once a cornerstone of the local community.

In addition to its signature sandwiches, Veronica’s is riding the wave of Mumbai’s artisanal bread renaissance, offering high-quality breads that elevate its menu. “Artisanal bread is having a huge moment,” says Shahzad, reflecting the city’s growing interest in sourdough and other craft breads.

But Veronica’s isn’t just about sandwiches. In the loft above the sandwich shop sits Papa’s, an intimate 12-seater counter restaurant that offers a fine-dining experience with a playful Indian twist. Dishes like lamb Wellington with morel mousse in korma sauce and dry-aged duck with sticky Indrayani rice challenge traditional perceptions of Indian cuisine while presenting flavors in innovative ways. Papa’s offers a warm, atelier-style dining experience that combines Indian ingredients with global techniques.

The inspiration for Papa’s comes from the fine-dining legacy of chef Floyd Cardoz, who was instrumental in bringing global attention to Indian flavors. His influence lives on through this creative venture, which invites guests to experience fine dining in a more casual, welcoming environment.

Veronica’s and Papa’s together represent a perfect blend of nostalgia, innovation, and culinary excellence, keeping Mumbai’s food scene as exciting as ever.
