Hermes kicked off its Spring/Summer 2024 runway show at Paris Fashion Week with a striking lineup of mesh crop tops, loose trousers, and calfskin coats in earthy tones, all designed by Nadege Vanhee. The collection, with its soft beige hues and luxurious materials, was briefly interrupted by animal rights activists from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), who took to the catwalk calling for the brand to stop using exotic skins.
The show opened with a series of light, neutral-toned looks, including a standout suede coat cinched at the back, when the first PETA protester burst onto the runway holding a sign. The protestor’s call to end the use of exotic skins was short-lived, as she was swiftly escorted out by security, just before the next model appeared in a tan leather bomber jacket paired with high-waisted culottes.
Undeterred, another protester stormed the stage shortly after, but was quickly removed by security, allowing the runway to continue with flowing sheer skirts and bright pink dresses. Despite the interruptions, the audience remained engaged as the show progressed, showcasing belted outerwear and high-end accessories that exemplified the brand’s signature luxurious appeal. However, gasps filled the room when a third activist made her appearance, though she too was promptly removed.
PETA’s presence at the Hermes show was not entirely unexpected, as the French luxury brand has long been a target of protests over its use of exotic skins. Hermes is renowned for its iconic Birkin bags, which often feature rare and luxurious materials such as crocodile and ostrich leather. These bags are highly sought after, with some fetching several hundred thousand dollars at auction.
While the disruptions briefly diverted attention, the Hermes show continued uninterrupted, offering a diverse collection of garments in striking pinks, sheer fabrics, and the brand’s signature tan leather pieces. Paris Fashion Week, which began on September 23 and will wrap up on October 1, features major fashion houses like Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Saint Laurent. The Hermes show, despite the interruptions, successfully showcased its latest collection, leaving its mark on the prestigious event.
