Taylor Swift was the star of the night at the MTV Europe Music Awards, held in Manchester, England, securing four major trophies. The pop icon, who led with seven nominations, took home awards for best artist, best video for her collaboration with Post Malone on “Fortnight,” best live act, and best U.S. artist. Despite currently being on her North American Eras tour, Swift appeared via video message to thank her fans.
“The support for the tour, the album, and the video this year has been incredible. I’m so grateful,” Swift shared, referencing her latest album “The Tortured Poets Department,” released in April.
South African artist Tyla was also a standout, winning three awards: best Afrobeats, best R&B, and best African act. The Manchester ceremony marked a return for the MTV EMAs after last year’s event in Paris was canceled due to the escalation of conflict in Gaza.
The night featured a heartfelt tribute to the late Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, who tragically passed away last month after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires at the age of 31. The show’s host, Rita Ora, who previously collaborated with Payne on the 2018 hit “For You,” delivered an emotional message.
“Liam was such a huge part of the MTV family and meant so much to many of us here,” said Ora. “He brought light and joy everywhere he went, and his impact will never be forgotten.”
Other notable winners included Sabrina Carpenter, whose song “Espresso” won best song. Ariana Grande was awarded best pop act, and Eminem clinched the best hip-hop category. Jimin took home the best K-pop award, Peso Pluma was recognized as best Latin artist, and Manchester’s own Liam Gallagher won best rock act. The best new artist accolade went to U.S. singer Benson Boone.
The event also celebrated some iconic performers, with U.S. rapper Busta Rhymes receiving the global icon award after delivering an electrifying medley of his greatest hits. The night concluded with the British electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, who were honored with the pop pioneer award, ending the ceremony on a high note.
With a mix of poignant tributes, memorable performances, and record-breaking wins, the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards proved to be a night to remember for fans and artists alike.
