Netflix Premieres ‘Beyond Goodbye’ at Busan Film Festival: A Heartfelt Japanese Drama

CultureFilm & Tv Netflix Premieres 'Beyond Goodbye' at Busan Film Festival: A Heartfelt Japanese Drama

At the 2023 Busan International Film Festival, Netflix premiered its highly anticipated Japanese drama Beyond Goodbye, starring Kasumi Arimura and Kentaro Sakaguchi. The show, which debuts this week, centers on Saeko (Arimura), a woman who is reunited with her lost love through a heart transplant. After her fiancé Yusuke (Toma Ikuta) dies in a tragic accident, Saeko’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Kazumasa (Sakaguchi), who has received Yusuke’s heart. As Kazumasa begins to exhibit traits and memories of Yusuke, Saeko faces a profound emotional conflict, believing that part of her fiancé still lives within him.

Arimura, born in 1993, has become one of Japan’s most renowned actresses, with a string of accolades, including two Japanese Academy Prizes. Known for her roles in Flying Colours and We Made a Beautiful Bouquet, she is a familiar face in both drama and genre films. In Beyond Goodbye, she brings depth to Saeko, a character grappling with grief and the surreal idea that her fiancé might be reincarnated through another person. Arimura’s portrayal reflects her unique blend of sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which enhances the emotional complexity of the drama.

Sakaguchi, best known for his work in What Comes After Love and I Am a Hero, portrays Kazumasa, a man struggling with his newfound identity after the transplant. As he develops new skills and preferences, including an unexpected love for coffee and an ability to play the piano, Kazumasa’s journey becomes a compelling exploration of memory and connection. Both actors spoke about the challenge of portraying characters with overlapping identities, particularly when each is in love with someone else.

The show’s storyline spans two locations—Hokkaido, Japan, and Hawaii, with some Hawaii scenes filmed in New Zealand due to production delays caused by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Coffee plays a key role in the narrative, serving as a symbolic connection between the characters’ memories and relationships.

Beyond Goodbye explores themes of reincarnation, love, and memory, blending elements of romance and melodrama in a unique, emotionally resonant way.
