As the Year of the Snake approaches, Hong Kong’s Gen Z is embracing a unique trend: keeping snakes as pets. Known for their exotic appeal and minimal care requirements, snakes are increasingly favored by young enthusiasts.
Eighteen-year-old Royce Wong, who helps at Slave World, a reptile shop in Mong Kok, notes that many of his peers, even those in secondary school, are drawn to snakes. “They’re actually chill and easy to keep,” he shares, highlighting their captivating colors, unique patterns, and calm demeanor as key attractions.
Maggie Chung, a 22-year-old reptile enthusiast working at Fishman Shop, agrees. She finds ball pythons particularly fascinating due to their distinctive appearance and manageable size. Growing up to 182cm, ball pythons curl into a ball when frightened, making them a non-threatening choice for first-time owners.
The cost of owning a pet snake varies. Common species like hognose snakes can start at HK$600 (US$80), while rarer python morphs—those with unique patterns or colors—can reach thousands. Beyond the snake itself, creating a suitable habitat adds to the expense, with artificial settings typically costing HK$2,000 to HK$3,000.
However, challenges accompany this exotic pet trend. Snakes primarily eat frozen mice, a storage issue that doesn’t sit well with many families. “Keeping frozen mice in the fridge can be off-putting for parents,” explains 25-year-old Matthew Cheong, who owns two corn snakes.
Dr. Fiona Woodhouse, deputy director of animal welfare at the Hong Kong SPCA, emphasizes the importance of understanding a snake’s specific needs. She cautions that keeping snakes as pets can be complex, as their welfare depends on adequate care, proper habitats, and regular feeding.
Woodhouse adds that some species can pose risks, biting when stressed or feeding. Prospective snake owners must thoroughly research their chosen species and consult reptile-savvy veterinarians to ensure proper care.
While exotic pets like snakes appeal to a niche audience for their low-maintenance charm, they are not for everyone. Time, experience, and lifestyle changes can hinder successful pet ownership. Still, for dedicated enthusiasts, the allure of these mysterious, fascinating creatures outweighs the challenges, making snakes an increasingly popular choice in Hong Kong’s pet scene.
