NORAD Tracks Santa’s Christmas Eve Journey Around the Globe

LifestyleNORAD Tracks Santa's Christmas Eve Journey Around the Globe

Santa Claus set off early on Christmas Eve, guiding his reindeer-powered sleigh to deliver presents to children around the world. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a joint U.S.-Canadian military organization based at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, has been tracking Santa’s journey for 69 years as part of a beloved holiday tradition.

Even in the face of potential government shutdowns, NORAD ensures Santa’s flight remains unaffected, as he relies on the power of Christmas spirit, not bureaucracy. “Santa runs on the Christmas spirit, so any possible government actions would not affect his mission,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Major Jennie Derenzis, a NORAD spokesperson. The base, which monitors air and maritime defenses, would have tracked Santa regardless, with volunteers on hand to assist with the tradition.

The origins of NORAD’s Santa tracking date back to 1955 when a Colorado Springs newspaper misprinted a phone number in a Santa Claus ad. Instead of reaching Santa, children accidentally called the Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD’s predecessor. An on-duty officer kindly took the calls, assuring young callers that Santa was on his way, sparking a tradition that continues to this day.

Over the years, advancements in technology have enhanced the program, making it possible to provide real-time updates on Santa’s journey. Families can follow his progress through the official NORAD Tracks Santa website at www.noradsanta.org. The site offers a host of festive activities, including a holiday countdown, games, a movie theater, holiday music, and a virtual North Pole Village. The site is accessible in multiple languages, allowing families worldwide to join in the fun.

Santa’s tracking updates are also shared on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X, as well as through services like Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, and OnStar. The program brings joy to millions each year, uniting communities in the shared excitement of Santa’s magical journey.

As Santa continues his gift-giving rounds, NORAD’s commitment to spreading holiday cheer remains unwavering. With volunteers answering calls from curious children and families following his sleigh’s progress, the NORAD Tracks Santa tradition exemplifies the joy and wonder of the holiday season.
