Elias Dosunmu: The Social Media Star Turning Viral Fame Into Culinary Success

LifestyleFoodElias Dosunmu: The Social Media Star Turning Viral Fame Into Culinary Success

At Madrid’s new restaurant, Pecados, the biggest draw isn’t just the fusion cuisine—it’s the young chef behind it. Elias Dosunmu, a 27-year-old Ukrainian-born culinary sensation, has amassed a massive online following, with 9.6 million TikTok fans, nearly five million YouTube subscribers, and two million Instagram followers. He describes himself as “Spain’s most followed gastronomy profile,” proving that in the digital age, culinary fame isn’t just about Michelin stars—it’s about social media influence.

Dosunmu’s journey to success is anything but conventional. Born near Kharkiv, Ukraine, he moved to Spain at 14 with his family. His diverse background is reflected in both his personal life and his culinary approach. He speaks Russian with his Spanish-Nigerian father and Ukrainian mother, whose roots also trace back to Jewish and Polish ancestry. At home, he and his brother communicate in Spanish, blending cultures just as effortlessly as he does flavors in his restaurant.

Before becoming a digital food icon, Dosunmu was pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering while working in a fast-food franchise. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he was furloughed, forcing him to reconsider his future. He turned to social media, researching content strategies and refining his approach with the help of his partner. His short, engaging recipe videos—packed with quick transitions, dynamic captions, and clever loops—quickly captivated audiences.

His dream was always to open a restaurant, and social media provided the platform to turn that vision into reality. Pecados caters to a younger audience, mirroring the demographic of his online followers. Among his customers is 12-year-old Marcos Castellanos, who convinced his parents to take him to Pecados as a Christmas gift. Having followed Dosunmu’s content on YouTube and TikTok, he enjoys trying out the chef’s recipes, including varenyky, a Ukrainian dumpling inspired by his grandmother’s cooking.

Despite his rapid rise to fame, Dosunmu attributes his success to relentless perseverance. He recalls his mother’s words: “Our people are used to surviving—literally.” His work ethic and adaptability have allowed him to redefine culinary stardom, proving that in the modern era, a chef can rise to prominence not through traditional training, but through millions of engaged followers.
