Diego Luna Reflects on “Andor” Season Two and Its Real-World Relevance

CultureFilm & TvDiego Luna Reflects on "Andor" Season Two and Its Real-World Relevance

For Diego Luna, the second season of “Andor,” the Disney Plus series set in the “Star Wars” universe, is particularly relevant to contemporary sociopolitical issues. Luna, who portrays Cassian Andor, noted how the show’s themes of community and civic responsibility resonate in real life. “Oh my God, it’s so pertinent today. But think about it. If it had been ready a year ago, it probably would have been pertinent again,” he said in an interview. The series showcases the importance of active citizenship, a message Luna feels is always timely.

The final season of the critically acclaimed show begins streaming on Disney Plus, following the continuing story of Cassian Andor and the formation of the Rebel Alliance, a central element of the “Star Wars” saga. The first season of “Andor” earned high praise and even received an Emmy nomination for best drama series.

Luna praised the work of Tony Gilroy, the series creator and writer, for crafting a show that consistently defies expectations. “The writing of Tony Gilroy, it’s always like proving you wrong. When you think, ‘OK, it’s going to go there and he’s going to solve it this way,’ he comes up with an idea that just makes you rethink everything and see it from a perspective you didn’t know it was even possible,” Luna explained. One of the unexpected plot elements in the new season is the complicated relationship between two Imperial officers, Dedra, played by Denise Gough, and Syril, portrayed by Kyle Soller. Fans of the show have been quick to “ship” the characters, hoping for a romantic resolution to their toxic relationship.

Gough admitted to not understanding the term “shipping” until actor Ben Mendelsohn, who plays antagonist Orson Krennic, explained it to her. “Ben Mendelsohn was like, ‘It’s like the Love Boat. You’re on the Love Boat,'” she recalled.

As the series draws to a close, Luna prepares to say goodbye to his iconic role. Reflecting on the end of his journey, he admitted that it would be an emotional process. “I’m going to need therapy to answer it,” Luna said, acknowledging the deep connection he has developed with his character over the years.
