Jensen McRae’s Journey from Viral Song to Debut Album

LifestyleJensen McRae’s Journey from Viral Song to Debut Album

In early 2021, as the Covid-19 vaccine rolled out, singer-songwriter Jensen McRae shared a humorous tweet predicting that Phoebe Bridgers would release a song about “hooking up in the car while waiting in line to get vaccinated at Dodger Stadium.” While Bridgers didn’t follow through with the song, McRae did, turning her playful idea into a full track titled “Immune.” The song, written in Bridgers’ reflective style, quickly gained attention after McRae posted a video of herself singing a “pre-emptive cover.” Within two weeks, McRae released the full version, which resonated deeply with listeners.

Reflecting on the moment, McRae, now 27, recalls the perfect timing: “It was a perfect storm,” she says. “I was parodying Phoebe Bridgers who was becoming world famous in that exact moment … I was also writing about this topic that everyone was thinking about constantly because we were in lockdowns.” The track’s release not only highlighted McRae’s unique voice but also struck a chord with fans, who were navigating the same uncertainty and isolation during the pandemic.

Bridgers herself caught wind of the video, reposting it with a simple, “oh my god.” The attention McRae received from the song helped pave the way for her debut EP, released in 2021, followed by her debut album in 2022. Her growing popularity led to tours with indie pop band Muna and singer-songwriter Noah Kahan, further solidifying her place in the indie music scene. McRae also signed with Dead Oceans, the same label that represents Phoebe Bridgers, marking another milestone in her career.

Now, McRae’s second album, I Don’t Know How, But They Found Me!, is set to release this week, promising to showcase her continued evolution as an artist. From a viral tweet to securing a label deal and touring with major acts, McRae’s career trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable. Fans can expect more emotionally charged folk-pop, with her distinctive songwriting style continuing to capture the essence of the times.
