Tony Awards 2025: Top Nominations Celebrate Broadway’s Bold New Season

Broadway’s 78th annual Tony Award nominations have spotlighted a bold and diverse season, with “Maybe Happy Ending,” “Buena Vista Social Club,” and “Death Becomes Her” leading the pack with ten nominations each. These standout musicals are redefining what audiences can expect from Broadway, blending inventive storytelling, musical richness, and thematic daring. From robots in futuristic Seoul to the vibrant history of a legendary Cuban music collective and a stage adaptation of a cult classic dark comedy, this year’s top contenders showcase genre-pushing innovation.

In the best play category, new works like “John Proctor is the Villain” reinterpret American classics to speak to contemporary issues such as the #MeToo movement, while Cole Escola’s “Oh, Mary!” takes a subversive look at the life of Mary Todd Lincoln through satire. Jez Butterworth’s “The Hills of California” explores familial complexities against the backdrop of a fading British seaside town, solidifying the playwright’s reputation for poignant, layered storytelling.

Notable revivals have also earned recognition, including “Gypsy,” “Sunset Blvd.,” and “Our Town,” reminding audiences of Broadway’s enduring love for classics when reimagined with fresh perspectives. This season also saw strong Hollywood representation, with George Clooney making a notable Broadway debut in “Good Night, and Good Luck.” Sarah Snook has earned acclaim for her one-woman performance in “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” and Sadie Sink was recognized for her role in “John Proctor is the Villain.”

However, some anticipated productions failed to make the cut. The high-budget “Othello,” starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, received no nominations, as did performances by Kieran Culkin and Robert Downey Jr. in “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “McNeal.”

On the musical front, standout acting nominees include Jonathan Groff as Bobby Darin in “Just in Time,” Audra McDonald in the revival of “Gypsy,” and Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Blvd.” Direction nods went to Michael Arden, Jamie Lloyd, Sam Mendes, and Danya Taymor for their innovative visions across musical and dramatic productions.

Special honors have been announced ahead of the June 8 ceremony. Harvey Fierstein will receive the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, while Celia Keenan-Bolger will be honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Award for her arts advocacy. As the Broadway community celebrates bold new voices and unforgettable performances, this year’s nominations affirm that there’s more room than ever for creative risk-taking on the stage.
