Tony Cruz’s High Hopes for Five G Patch in Upcoming Sha Tin Race

SportsTony Cruz's High Hopes for Five G Patch in Upcoming Sha Tin Race

In the highly competitive horse racing scene at Sha Tin, trainer Tony Cruz is setting his sights on success with Five G Patch, a Group One placegetter, in the upcoming Class Two Yan Chai Trophy (2,000m) race. With an impressive record that includes two wins and six places from 17 appearances since being imported, Five G Patch has steadily climbed the ranks, demonstrating resilience and capability in each race.

Cruz’s confidence in Five G Patch comes after the gelding’s commendable sixth-place finish in the prestigious Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m) just two weeks ago. Despite challenges in that race, including a wide position and settling issues, Cruz believes the upcoming 2,000m race at Sha Tin could unveil a transformed Five G Patch, especially with jockey Zac Purton on board.

Known for his adaptability across distances ranging from 2,000m to 2,400m, Five G Patch has shown his potential in previous races. His journey in Hong Kong began in the 2021-22 season, where he initially struggled but soon found his stride, winning the Class Three Exultant Handicap (2,000m) and later the Class Three Azalea Handicap over the same distance. His most notable achievement came in May’s Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m), where he placed third behind renowned horses Russian Emperor and Romantic Warrior.

This weekend’s race presents an opportunity for Five G Patch to compete against emerging Classic Series contenders, including Awesome Fluke and Ensued. Cruz, a legend in Hong Kong racing, is preparing a strong lineup for the 10-race program, featuring eight runners from his stable. Among them is Beauty Crescent, another Irish import competing in the Class Three Poinsettia Handicap (1,400m), who has been consistently placing in recent races under jockey James McDonald.

Cruz’s team also includes debutants Californiatotality and True Genius, alongside Happydearhappydeer, Lovero, and last-start winner All Are Mine. This diverse array of horses showcases Cruz’s ability to nurture and develop talent across different race conditions and distances.

As the race day approaches, Cruz’s anticipation and strategy for Five G Patch and his other entrants highlight the dynamic and thrilling nature of horse racing at Sha Tin, where skill, strategy, and a bit of luck converge to create memorable racing moments.
