SportsAngelina Ye Lei Triumphs at Women's China Open Golf Championship

Angelina Ye Lei, a 22-year-old rookie professional golfer, made a striking impression by winning her first professional title at the Women’s China Open in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Her victory came after a closely contested final round against Chinese amateur Wang Zixuan, where Ye emerged two strokes ahead to seize the championship.

Entering the final round at the Orient Golf and Country Club with a slim one-stroke lead over the Beijing teenager, Ye demonstrated remarkable composure and skill. She closed with an impressive five-under 67, compared to Wang’s 68, etching her name on the trophy of the 13th national championship.

The victory was not only a milestone in Ye’s career but also financially rewarding, with a prize of 75,000 yuan ($10,592). Additionally, Ye’s win at this China LPGA Tour’s flagship event earned her six world ranking points, marking a significant ascent in her professional journey.

Reflecting on her win, Shanghai native Ye expressed that the most challenging moment was the final three-foot putt. Despite holding a two-shot lead, she aimed to finish the event without a bogey, which she achieved to secure her maiden victory. Remarkably, Ye became the first player in CLPGA Tour history to win a tournament without dropping a single shot.

Ye’s journey to this victory is a blend of rapid success and long-term dedication. Having turned professional just five months ago and participating in only six or seven events as a pro, Ye considered her win to be swift. However, she also recognized it as the culmination of a decade-long journey in golf, having made her CLPGA debut at the age of 12.

Other noteworthy performances in the tournament included China’s Michelle Zhang (Zhang Yunxuan), who finished third with a closing score of 69, trailing Ye by three shots. Close behind was rookie pro Fiona Xu from New Zealand and Thai veteran Onkanok Soisuwan.

The final-round duel between Ye and Wang was a display of skill and strategy. Ye responded to Wang’s early birdie with consistent play, eventually gaining the upper hand on the back nine. Her consecutive birdies from the 12th hole and a key birdie on the 17th were decisive in securing her victory.

Ye’s win at the Women’s China Open is a testament to her talent and potential in the world of professional golf. It marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career, as she continues to make her mark on the international stage. Her achievement is a source of inspiration for aspiring golfers and a notable moment in the history of Chinese golf.
