Sweden Offers A Taste of Island Life: Apply to Be a Custodian of Your Own Private Island

WorldEuropeSweden Offers A Taste of Island Life: Apply to Be a Custodian of Your Own Private Island

Sweden is inviting individuals to experience the ultimate in natural luxury by offering the chance to become a custodian of a private island for one year. This unique initiative by Visit Sweden aims to share a distinct Swedish perspective on freedom and responsibility within nature. Five lucky winners will get to enjoy the tranquility of their own island, provided they respect the environment and local wildlife.

Sweden, a country boasting more islands than any other nation globally, is providing an unparalleled opportunity for people to connect with nature. The “Your Swedish Island” campaign offers a chance to experience genuine luxury through peace and quiet on a personal island. As CEO of Visit Sweden, Susanne Andersson, stated, “We would like to invite people to enjoy what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquillity of nature on your own island.”

“Most people think luxury means expensive things. Sweden is proving luxury can be something else: a quiet island, clean air, and the chance to enjoy nature without harming it.” — Georgio Daher, CEO and Founder of Islands.co

It’s important to note that winning an island does not grant ownership or the right to rename it. Instead, winners will be appointed as official island custodians, receiving a diploma to commemorate their role. This custodianship grants a one-year right to use the island for activities such as camping, swimming, and hosting friends, all while demonstrating care for the natural surroundings. Furthermore, due to Sweden’s Right of Public Access law, other individuals may still visit or pass through the island during this period.

Five distinct islands are up for grabs: Medbådan, Flisan, Storberget, Tjuvholmen, and Marsten. The prize package includes a round-trip journey to Sweden for two people. To participate, applicants must submit a video, no longer than one minute, explaining why they deserve to be an island custodian. Sharing the video on social media with the hashtag #YourSwedishIsland can increase the chances of winning. The deadline for entries is April 17, 2026, with winners to be announced in May of the same year. Visit Sweden is intentionally excluding billionaires from the competition, as they aim to promote a vision of luxury centered on simplicity and nature rather than material wealth.
