Senator Mitch McConnell has not yet been medically cleared to leave a rehabilitation facility where he is undergoing physical therapy, his office announced Monday, weeks after a fall left the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican hospitalized.
The update, which included a statement from the congressional Office of the Attending Physician, came shortly before Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm picnic, a marquee political event featuring speeches from candidates seeking office across the state. McConnell confirmed he will be unable to attend this year.
“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton,” McConnell said in a written statement, adding that he was sending his best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful event.
McConnell, who first attended the picnic 42 years ago, reflected that Fancy Farm was once “a lonely place for Republicans” but noted how the political landscape in the region has since shifted.
The senator was admitted to the hospital on June 14 and later revealed the cause was a fall. He contracted polio in early childhood and has long acknowledged difficulty walking and climbing stairs as an adult.
Since leaving the hospital, McConnell has maintained a demanding rehabilitation schedule that includes multiple daily sessions aimed at rebuilding strength and reducing the risk of future falls.
“His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office,” the physician’s office stated.
McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, stepped down from his leadership role but has remained an influential voice in the chamber. His health has drawn increasing attention in recent years, and questions over succession have intensified as the race to eventually fill his seat takes shape, with figures such as contenders drawing high-profile financial backing already mobilizing.
No timeline has been given for McConnell’s return to Washington. His office indicated that further updates would be provided as his recovery progresses.
