Social Security COLA for 2027 May Reach 3.6%, Highest in Three Years

WorldAmericaSocial Security COLA for 2027 May Reach 3.6%, Highest in Three Years

Independent analysts estimated on Thursday that the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 could land between 3.5% and 3.6%, following new federal inflation data. That would be the largest annual increase in three years for roughly 70 million American beneficiaries.

The projection follows August consumer price figures showing inflation running hotter than earlier in the year. The Social Security Administration calculates the annual adjustment using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, averaged over the third quarter of each year.

The final figure will not be confirmed until October, once September inflation data completes the third-quarter measurement. Two more monthly readings remain before the calculation closes.

A 3.6% adjustment would raise the average retirement benefit by an estimated $71 per month. The 2026 adjustment was set at 2.8%, following 3.2% and an 8.7% increase in prior years driven by the post-pandemic inflation surge.

A larger check carries a caveat. The higher estimate reflects prices that have stayed elevated rather than eased, meaning the raise chiefly compensates for cost increases beneficiaries have already absorbed. Rising Medicare Part B premiums, typically deducted directly from Social Security payments, can also erode the net gain.

Some advocates argue the CPI-W understates the spending patterns of older Americans, who devote a greater share of income to health care and housing. Alternative measures that weight those categories more heavily have at times produced higher figures.

Earlier projections had pointed to a similar range, and the latest data has kept those forecasts for retiree checks broadly intact. Estimates from different analysts vary by a tenth of a percentage point depending on their inflation assumptions.

The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce the official 2027 cost-of-living adjustment in October, with the higher payments taking effect in January.
