The United Arab Emirates said on Monday it had intercepted a drone that entered its airspace from Iran, widening the theatre of a confrontation that began with U.S. strikes on Iranian territory.
Emirati authorities rejected reports circulating online that its Al Menhad airbase, south of Dubai, had been hit. Officials described those accounts as false and said the intercepted drone caused no damage or casualties on the ground.
The interception drew the Gulf federation directly into an escalation that had until now centred on Iranian territory and the Strait of Hormuz. The UAE hosts foreign military personnel and sits across the Gulf from Iran, placing its airspace and infrastructure within range of the exchange.
The wider crisis began after U.S. forces struck targets inside Iran, prompting Iranian retaliation. Tehran and Washington have since traded further attacks, and the earlier phase had already pushed oil markets sharply. An earlier pause in the fighting had briefly eased pressure on fuel markets before the latest round.
Energy markets reacted to the renewed hostilities. Crude prices climbed as traders priced in the risk of disruption to Gulf shipping lanes, through which a large share of global oil supply passes. Energy shares rallied on the move, while stock index futures slipped on concern over broader economic fallout.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the central worry for markets. Roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes through the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, and any interference with tanker traffic there tends to lift prices quickly.
The UAE has not said whether it holds Iran directly responsible for launching the drone or whether it originated with an allied group. It did not announce any retaliatory measures. Iran has not publicly commented on the claim.
The drone interception adds a new front to a confrontation that had been confined to direct U.S.-Iran exchanges. Gulf states have long sought to avoid being pulled into open conflict between the two powers, balancing security ties with Washington against proximity to Tehran.
The UAE said its air defences remained active and that it would respond to any threat to its territory.
