SportsMegan Rapinoe's Illustrious Career Ends with Injury in NWSL Championship Game

Megan Rapinoe, a name synonymous with excellence in U.S. women’s soccer, faced an unexpected end to her illustrious career during the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) championship game between OL Reign and NJ/NY Gotham. The match, held at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, on Saturday, took a dramatic turn when Rapinoe suffered an injury in the early minutes, leading to her premature exit from what would be her final professional game.

The incident occurred in the sixth minute of the first half in a moment without player contact. Rapinoe experienced what she described as a “huge pop,” a jarring end to her participation in the championship. She was replaced by Bethany Balcer, but her team, the Reign, eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat against Gotham.

Rapinoe, known for her resilience and sense of humor, reflected on the injury with a mix of humor and disappointment. Despite the abrupt and unanticipated nature of her final game, she acknowledged the unpredictability of life and sports, emphasizing that athletes don’t always get the ‘perfect ending’. At 38 years old, she had been in great shape before the match, with no signs of the impending injury.

Rapinoe’s retirement from the U.S. national team in 2023 concluded a remarkable journey that began in 2006. Her international career was decorated with outstanding achievements, including 203 appearances, 63 goals, and 73 assists. She played a pivotal role in the U.S. team’s success, contributing significantly to their two FIFA Women’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019 and securing an Olympic gold medal in 2012, among other honors.

Her club career was equally impressive. With 148 professional games under her belt, Rapinoe’s tenure included stints with Olympique Lyonnais in the Division 1 Feminine (D1F) and OL Reign in the NWSL. Her scoring prowess was evident with 63 goals, and she claimed numerous titles, including a D1F championship, a Coupe de France Feminine, three NWSL Shield championships, and a Women’s Cup.

Reflecting on her career, Rapinoe expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to play at the highest level, alongside some of the best players in the world. She cherished the relationships built throughout her career, highlighting the personal connections and camaraderie that enriched her experience in the sport.

Rapinoe’s departure from professional soccer marks the end of an era. Her impact on the field and her advocacy off it have left an indelible mark on the sport. As she closes this chapter, her legacy as one of the most influential figures in women’s soccer continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
