Pearl Lam, a native of Jardine’s Lookout in Hong Kong, shares a fascinating tale of her journey from a young student in Hong Kong to a globally recognized figure in the art world. Her early education took place at St Paul’s Convent School and Rosaryhill School, but it was her time abroad that truly shaped her life.
At 11, Lam left Hong Kong to pursue education first in the United States and then in the United Kingdom. She describes her time in America as challenging and cold, but her experiences in the UK were transformative. Lam yearned for the freedom and anonymity she found abroad, contrasting sharply with the expectations tied to her family name in Hong Kong.
Despite her passion for art and architecture, financial constraints led her to study accountancy and financial management at the University of Buckingham. The university’s vibrant social life captivated her, and she later transitioned to law at City University, London, to extend her stay in the UK.
Returning to Hong Kong in 1992, Lam was tasked with a significant development project in Shanghai, 41 Hengshan Road. Despite initial challenges, including a language barrier, she navigated her way through the project and immersed herself in the local art scene. Her first purchases were paintings by Shanghainese artist Sun Liang, marking the beginning of her deep involvement in Chinese contemporary art.
Lam’s experiences in Shanghai significantly shaped her perspectives, shifting from a colonial attitude to a more inquisitive and respectful approach towards Chinese culture and the burgeoning art scene. She organized pop-up shows in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and her efforts in property development, particularly with 41 Hengshan Road, earned her recognition for contributing to the city’s skyline.
After her father’s passing in 2005, Lam opened her gallery in Shanghai, focusing on Chinese abstract and ink brushwork. She expanded her reach to design, inviting international designers to collaborate with Chinese traditional handicrafts. In 2012, she opened Pearl Lam Galleries in Hong Kong, further cementing her influence in the art world.
Lam’s passion for art extends beyond Asia, with frequent visits to America, Africa, and various other regions to explore and represent diverse art forms. Her time during the Covid-19 pandemic in London reaffirmed her love for the city, leading her to spend more time there.
Despite her extensive travels, Lam maintains close relationships with her extended family of friends and ex-boyfriends, fostering a network of support and friendship. Her homes in London, Hong Kong, and Shanghai serve as hubs for her global art endeavors.
