Tom Simpson, an accomplished equine physiotherapist, has been instrumental in the success of some of the most renowned racehorses, including Romantic Warrior, contributing to six Group One Cox Plate victories. Fifteen years ago, Simpson transitioned from working with humans to horses, applying similar treatment techniques with remarkable results.
Simpson’s approach to equine therapy mirrors his human physiotherapy practices, adapting to each horse’s unique needs. His methods include acupuncture, TENS application, stretching, soft-tissue release, and theraguns. He emphasizes the tactile nature of horses, which makes them receptive and responsive to treatment.
The physiotherapist’s magic touch was evident during his last feature day appearance at Sha Tin in May 2016 with Chautauqua. He returns this weekend to support Romantic Warrior in the Hong Kong Cup (2,000m), following the horse’s thrilling Cox Plate victory in October.
Simpson’s involvement with Romantic Warrior began before the Cox Plate, through his association with trainer Danny Shum Chap-shing. He describes the experience of working with the horse as an enormous privilege and thrill, recalling watching the Cox Plate in Shum’s stable with great excitement.
During Romantic Warrior’s Australian campaign, Simpson and his team were closely involved, fine-tuning the horse’s condition right up to race morning. Their efforts mirrored the tapering strategy used in sports, focusing on alleviating any discomfort and ensuring the horse was at peak condition for the race.
With the Hong Kong Cup approaching, Simpson is satisfied with Romantic Warrior’s current form, noting the horse’s heightened energy levels, akin to those before the Cox Plate. His work this week also includes caring for Wellington and another Cup runner, Sword Point.
Simpson’s commitment to equine therapy extends beyond individual horses. He envisions a permanent move to Hong Kong, drawn by the city’s racing culture and the opportunity to provide targeted care to horses confined more frequently than in Australia.
His ambition to relocate to Hong Kong underlines his dedication to the sport and his belief in the significant benefits of physiotherapy for racehorses. Simpson’s expertise and passion for equine care not only enhance the performance of individual horses like Romantic Warrior but also contribute to the overall excellence of the horse racing industry in Hong Kong.
