China’s National Diving Championships, currently underway in Wuhan, Hubei Province, has become a pivotal event for the country’s elite divers. In a significant development, Wang Zongyuan and Chen Yuxi have earned their spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by clinching gold medals in their respective events. This championship, a crucial qualifier for the Olympics, has seen over 200 divers compete, with the event running until next Tuesday.
The championship is the second of three qualifying events for the Paris Olympics, with the first being the national diving tournament held in March and the final qualifier set for the World Aquatics Championships in Doha in February 2024. The qualification process involves a point-based system where the two best rankings out of the three qualifiers are translated into points. The top four athletes with the highest points in each event earn a spot on the Olympic roster.
Wang Zongyuan, a 20-year-old rising star in Chinese diving, demonstrated remarkable consistency by leading all six rounds in the final of the 3-meter springboard event. Meanwhile, Chen Yuxi, a two-time Olympic medalist, edged past Olympic champion Quan Hongchan in the 10-meter platform, marking a significant achievement given her loss to Quan in October’s Hangzhou Asian Games.
Chen Yuxi, reflecting on her performance, acknowledged some mistakes in the preliminaries but expressed satisfaction with her overall effort and the outcome. Her victory and Wang’s consistent performance in the March national tournament have now secured their places for the upcoming Olympics.
The championship is not only a battleground for top divers but also a platform for emerging talents. One such talent is 13-year-old diver Jiang Linjing from Guangdong Province, who impressively finished third behind Olympic champions Chen and Quan in the highly competitive 10-meter platform. Jiang, who considers Chen and Quan as her idols, acknowledged her nervousness in big events and her attempt at one of the most challenging dives for the first time in competition.
The men’s 10-meter platform final, scheduled for Saturday, is particularly anticipated. This event is the only one in which China did not win gold at the World Aquatics Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, in July. Eyes will also be on the women’s 3-meter springboard, another highlight of the championship.
In a move to encourage innovation and the execution of challenging dives, the event organizers have introduced special awards recognizing both the difficulty and groundbreaking achievements in diving. This initiative aims to inspire athletes to push their limits and showcase exceptional talent as they prepare for the global stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
