Chinese Teacher’s Innovative Anti-Bullying Lecture Wins Hearts Online

LifestyleChinese Teacher's Innovative Anti-Bullying Lecture Wins Hearts Online

In a primary school in Liaoning province, northeastern China, a unique morning lecture on anti-bullying given by teacher Jian Dan has not only resonated with her Primary Two students but also captivated a large online audience. Her approach, blending vivid imagery with a strong message, has earned over 600,000 likes on Douyin, highlighting the power of innovative teaching methods in addressing critical social issues.

The issue came to Jian’s attention when a concerned mother reported her son being bullied by a classmate. To address this, Jian devised a simple yet profound demonstration for her class. She invited a student to try damaging a pack of crispy instant noodles, an apple, and a rock. The noodles crumbled easily under pressure, but the rock remained undamaged, no matter how hard it was hit. This analogy became the cornerstone of Jian’s lesson: “Don’t be crispy instant noodles. Be a rock.” She emphasized the importance of resilience and standing up against bullying.

Jian’s message extended beyond just dealing with bullies. She reminded her pupils that every classmate is precious, like the apple of their parents’ eyes. She encouraged empathy and understanding, urging them not to target others for their weaknesses or lower grades. Jian’s approach to cultivating kindness and strength among her students was met with widespread acclaim. Comments on Douyin lauded her for being a great teacher, with one user remarking, “The kids are lucky to have a teacher like you.”

This lecture is part of a growing trend in China where schools are actively addressing bullying. Many institutions have started inviting police officers to give talks on the subject, indicating a rising awareness and seriousness about school violence. Post-lecture, Jian followed up privately with both the bullied student and the bully, finding that her message had positively influenced the latter to recognize his mistake.

Jian Dan’s innovative teaching method sheds light on the crucial role educators play in shaping young minds, not only in academic knowledge but also in moral values and social skills. Her approach serves as an inspiring example for teachers worldwide, showcasing the impact of creative and empathetic education in nurturing a kinder and stronger future generation.
