SportsAnticipation Builds for Classic Series at Sha Tin with Rising Stars in Action

The racing scene at Sha Tin is buzzing with excitement as a new generation of thoroughbreds prepares to showcase their potential in the lead-up to this season’s Classic Series. The spotlight is on Caspar Fownes-trained Awesome Fluke and John Size’s Ensued, both making promising strides in their Hong Kong careers and aiming to solidify their positions as strong contenders for the Classic Series in the upcoming Class Two Yan Chai Trophy (2,000m).

Awesome Fluke, a victor in three Australian races under John O’Shea, has shown promising signs in his Hong Kong starts, particularly in his last outing over 1,800m. With a move to the 2,000m distance, Fownes, a two-time Hong Kong Derby winner, is eager to see his charge’s performance at a longer trip, though acknowledging the challenge posed by a wide draw.

Ensued, transitioning smoothly from James Fanshawe‘s UK training, has already tasted success in Hong Kong with two wins, including over 2,000m. The Lemon Drop Kid progeny will see jockey Karis Teetan in the saddle this time, replacing Brenton Avdulla.

This weekend’s race is not just about these two hopefuls but also features several other promising youngsters, including Tourbillon Diamond and Five G Patch, who have already proven their mettle with placements in Hong Kong Group One races.

The anticipation extends to the Class Four (Restricted) Erica Handicap (1,400m), where 14 Classic Series-eligible horses will compete, highlighting the depth of emerging talent. Trainer Benno Yung Tin-pang, fresh from last year’s victory in a similar event with newcomer Forerunner, is set to unveil another debutant, Hero Warrior, adding to the intrigue of the day.

This lineup at Sha Tin signifies more than just a series of races; it’s a glimpse into the future of Hong Kong horse racing, with emerging stars poised to make their mark in the esteemed Classic Series. Fans and enthusiasts eagerly await to see which of these promising thoroughbreds will rise to the occasion, setting the stage for a thrilling racing season.
