Hong Kong is preparing for the much-anticipated public debut of its first-ever baby panda twins, set to take place on Sunday at Ocean Park. The adorable pair, one male and one female, were born six months ago and will join the park’s existing panda residents, further cementing the city’s deep connection to these beloved animals.
John Lee, the city’s leader, expressed excitement over the historic birth, emphasizing that it has become a source of immense joy and pride for Hong Kong. To celebrate, a naming competition has been launched, with the winning names expected to be revealed in the first half of the year.
Their mother, Ying Ying, made history as the oldest recorded giant panda to give birth, just one day before turning 19. Her remarkable achievement has fueled a surge in panda-themed marketing campaigns throughout the city. From themed decorations in metro trains and airport express lines to an art exhibition featuring 2,500 panda sculptures placed across different locations, Hong Kong has fully embraced the excitement surrounding the twin cubs.
In addition to the locally born twins, Hong Kong has recently welcomed two other pandas from Sichuan, An An and Ke Ke, gifted by the central Chinese government.
