Nearly three years after its debut, the hit Netflix series Wednesday returns with a highly anticipated second season, further diving into the eerie world of the Addams Family. The new season had its premiere in London on Wednesday, where the cast and creators gathered on a purple carpet at Westminster’s Central Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Centre, setting the tone for what promises to be a bolder and more expansive continuation of the series.
Jenna Ortega reprises her role as the sharp-witted Wednesday Addams, who returns to Nevermore Academy as an unwanted celebrity. Despite her fame, Wednesday is quickly drawn into fresh supernatural mysteries while grappling with the instability of her psychic abilities. This season also intensifies the family drama, as her younger brother Pugsley, portrayed by Isaac Ordonez, begins attending Nevermore, and their eccentric parents make frequent appearances on campus. Ortega describes the season as one filled with heightened pressure and emotional upheaval for her character, noting that Wednesday is “knocked off her feet” by what she faces.
Series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar promise an expansion of the Addams universe. “There’s more of the Addams Family this season,” said Gough, highlighting that returning characters are given more depth and development, while new faces are introduced. Among the notable additions are Steve Buscemi as Nevermore’s new principal Barry Dort and Joanna Lumley as the Addams family matriarch, Grandmama Hester Frump. In a surprise casting move, pop icon Lady Gaga appears in a guest role as a teacher in Part Two.
This season is deeply rooted in family dynamics, particularly between the Addams women across three generations. Millar emphasized that the heart of the story is about learning to relinquish control and exploring themes of sisterhood and female friendship. Ortega, now 22, also took on an executive producer role for Season Two, a shift she described not as a power move but as a means to gain creative freedom.
Fellow cast member Emma Myers, who plays Wednesday’s roommate Enid Sinclair, praised Ortega for her leadership and support, describing her as the voice of the cast.
Directed in part by returning filmmaker Tim Burton, Wednesday Season Two will be released in two parts: the first four episodes debut on August 6, followed by the final four on September 3.
