Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explained that the decision to trade star pass rusher Micah Parsons was based on financial strategy rather than sentiment. The move, which stunned fans across the league, came down to balancing one massive contract against the opportunity to strengthen the roster with multiple elite players.
On August 28, the Green Bay Packers signed Parsons to a record-setting four-year, $186 million extension, with $136 million guaranteed, according to Spotrac. The deal makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history and capped off a lengthy contract standoff with the Cowboys. While Jones praised Parsons’ talent and impact, he emphasized that the economics of the NFL salary cap dictated the decision.
Jones noted that if the Cowboys had kept Parsons on such a massive deal, it would have limited their flexibility to sign or retain other top players. By trading him, Dallas acquired valuable draft capital and financial breathing room, which Jones believes can translate into securing up to five high-caliber players for the price of one superstar. “If you look at the numbers in terms of his compensation over the next five years, and then compare that to what those draft picks can bring us, it’s clear,” Jones said. “It’s about spreading the resources across the field.”
The 26-year-old defensive end, who is in the final year of his rookie deal worth around $24 million, has built a reputation as one of the most dominant defenders in the NFL. A four-time Pro Bowler, Parsons has recorded more than 12 sacks in each of his first four seasons, cementing his place among the league’s elite.
Jones was quick to clarify that the decision was not personal, stressing his admiration for Parsons as both a player and a person. “I like him. He’s a great player,” Jones said, while adding that the realities of availability in football influenced his thinking. Injuries can sideline even the most talented players, and Jones argued that distributing salary commitments across multiple stars increases the chances of having more impact players on the field throughout the season.
While Cowboys fans may be disappointed to see a franchise cornerstone leave, Jones expressed pride in Parsons’ new chapter with Green Bay. “I’m proud for him, proud for the Packers,” Jones said, framing the trade as an opportunity for both sides to benefit.
