Iran has accused Ukraine of carrying out an attack on a commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, killing one sailor and wounding another, and has summoned Ukrainian diplomats in Tehran to protest what it described as a hostile and criminal act.
Iranian authorities said the strike hit an Iranian ship operating in the Caspian, a body of water bordered by Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan that has largely been insulated from the wider conflict engulfing the region. Tehran characterised the incident as a serious escalation and vowed a response.
The attack marks an apparent extension of hostilities far from the traditional front lines of both the Middle East conflict and the war between Ukraine and Russia. It came alongside a series of developments underscoring how the confrontation involving Iran has broadened across multiple theatres.
The US military said it had disabled a tanker accused of breaking a blockade on Iran, releasing footage it said showed forces boarding the vessel. Separately, Saudi military strikes targeted Iran-backed Houthi positions in Yemen, adding to a widening arc of confrontation stretching from the Arabian Peninsula to the Caspian.
Kyiv has not publicly confirmed responsibility for the Caspian strike. The reported targeting of Iranian shipping would represent a notable expansion of Ukraine’s military operations, which have primarily focused on Russian territory and assets since the start of the war.
Iran has increasingly found itself at the centre of overlapping conflicts in recent months, following a string of strikes on its energy infrastructure and confrontations over key maritime routes.
