This past weekend marked an important event in Chinese history: the 70th anniversary of the victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, a conflict that spanned from 1950-53. To pay tribute to this monumental occasion, the esteemed Tianjin Conservatory of Music presented a spectacular performance of the ethnic opera, “Bond of Unity”, at the China National Opera House. The opera was initially created in 1981, serving as a powerful homage to the courageous spirit that emerged during the war. Now, in light of the commemorative anniversary, the opera has been resurrected and reimagined by the creative forces at the Tianjin Conservatory.
Bringing this epochal tale to life were several prominent vocalists, namely Wang Hongwei and Huang Huali. They effectively embodied the valorous actions of the hero Huang Jiguang and his comrades, and the close-knit friendship formed between the Chinese People’s Volunteers army and the Korean people in their shared struggle against US aggression. Their compelling performances, combined with the opera’s deeply emotive melodies and distinctive regional nuances, left an indelible impression on the spectators.
The “Bond of Unity” production assembled an impressive team of creators, ranging from experienced industry veterans to rising talents. With guidance from experts like Qiao Peijuan, and contributions from various esteemed individuals in the music and theater industry, the opera’s production quality was an impressive testament to the combined force of the industry’s expertise.
Remarkably, the opera incorporated a vast 80-member youth symphony orchestra and a 110-member youth chorus, comprising a mixture of skilled students and faculty members from the Tianjin Conservatory of Music. Each performer contributed their own unique talent and dedication to the performance, bringing an additional layer of dynamism to the opera.
The impressive rendition of “Bond of Unity” at the China National Opera House resonated deeply with the audience. The viewers could almost feel the tangible essence of heroism and selflessness emanating from the characters on stage.
