Financial constraints have, unfortunately, hindered some university delegations from gracing the FISU World University Games, according to insights shared by FISU Acting President Leonz Eder. The absence of these teams was felt deeply by all involved, especially given the dedication and hard work of the athletes who aspired to compete on this international stage.
Several eminent countries that had been expected to showcase their talent were absent, with financial woes cited as the primary barrier. Eder lamented, “These athletes have dedicated countless hours to their training, gearing up for a chance to compete against their peers on a global platform. The realization that they won’t be part of this vast gathering, which boasts over 110 delegations, is indeed heartbreaking.”
Historical data accentuates this absence. The last Summer FISU Games, hosted in Napoli, Italy, in 2019, saw participation from a whopping 118 delegations. In contrast, the Chengdu edition could only muster 113, with notable countries such as Mexico, Canada, and the UK not marking their presence.
The FISU, displaying an empathetic approach, reached out to every non-participating country to understand the root cause of their absence. Eder noted, “While some nations voiced concerns regarding potential pandemic restrictions, we assured them that the Games are fully open with no such impediments.”
Feedback from the absent countries, post the event’s commencement, was filled with remorse. They acknowledged the grandeur of the event, especially after viewing the mesmerizing imagery broadcasted on television. Eder, reflecting on this sentiment, expressed, “Interactions with peers from participating nations have made them realize the gravity of the missed opportunity. It’s truly disheartening.”
However, amidst these concerns, there’s a silver lining, the hope that these countries would grace future editions of the games, bringing with them their unique flair and competitiveness.
Eder further stressed the importance of channeling the attention towards the athletes who have made it to Chengdu. He said, “In light of the challenges presented by the global pandemic over the last two years, having 6,500 athletes competing here is commendable. The spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and dedication displayed by these athletes is what we should focus on.”
