BusinessAutomotiveChina's Charging Infrastructure Sees Nearly 100% YoY Growth, Totaling 5.2 Million Units

China’s charging infrastructure has experienced tremendous growth in 2022, with a near 100 percent year-on-year increase, bringing the total number of charging units to 5.2 million, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA) on Monday. The numbers include 650,000 public charging facilities, bringing the cumulative total to 1.8 million, and 1.9 million private charging facilities, bringing the cumulative total to over 3.4 million. The NEA said that charging infrastructure is an important guarantee for the development of the new energy vehicle industry, and it plays a crucial role in promoting the clean and low-carbon transformation of China’s transportation sector.

Liang Changxin, the spokesperson for the NEA, said that China’s charging infrastructure has seen rapid development in recent years and has become the largest and most widely distributed charging infrastructure network in the world. He said that the charging market in China is showing a diversified development trend, with over 3,000 charging pile operating companies. Liang noted that the volume of electricity charged for electric vehicles has continued to grow, with the total amount exceeding 40 billion kilowatt-hours in 2022, a year-on-year increase of over 85 percent.

The development of China’s charging infrastructure has been driven by the country’s increasing adoption of new energy vehicles. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the sales of new energy vehicles in China reached 4.17 million units in 2021, an increase of 80 percent year-on-year. With the government’s focus on green development, the trend is expected to continue, further driving the demand for charging infrastructure.

The NEA has been working to further promote the development of charging infrastructure. In September 2021, the NEA released guidelines to encourage the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in China. The guidelines aim to promote the integration of energy, transportation, and other sectors, and improve the quality of charging services for new energy vehicles. The NEA has also encouraged the use of renewable energy in charging stations to reduce carbon emissions.

In summary, the rapid growth of China’s charging infrastructure is a testament to the country’s commitment to green development and promoting the adoption of new energy vehicles. With the largest and most widely distributed charging infrastructure network in the world, China is well-positioned to continue driving the adoption of new energy vehicles and contributing to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
