Critical Role, a media empire built on the popular game Dungeons & Dragons, began as a live-streamed campaign by a group of professional voice actors in March 2015. Since its inception, the company has expanded into a production studio, gaming division, publishing arm, streaming service, record label, and charity initiative, gaining a massive following. Its growth mirrors the rising demand for niche streaming services and alternative content, with Critical Role’s own platform, Beacon, gaining traction.
Although the company is privately held and does not disclose financial details, a leaked Twitch report indicated that Critical Role earned $9.6 million in direct payouts from the streaming service between 2019 and 2021. This success stems from the company’s strategy of developing a rich intellectual property, centered around the fantasy world of Exandria, created by the founding members—Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham.
Critical Role has produced over 2,500 hours of original content and more than 30 shows, along with nearly 70 books, comics, and novels, many derived from the company’s games. As the company matures, it continues to diversify, venturing beyond Dungeons & Dragons. Mercer, the company’s game master, notes that Critical Role’s growth is focused on creating opportunities for collaboration with up-and-coming talent.
Animation is one of the company’s new frontiers, with the successful animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Amazon Prime Video, funded by a record-breaking $11.3 million Kickstarter campaign. A second season is already underway, with plans for a third show centered on the characters from the second campaign. Critical Role also plans to release a new animated series, “Wildemount Wildings,” and other creative projects such as books and a self-help guide written by Riegel’s character.
The company’s live shows are also a major draw, with Critical Role recently selling out Wembley Stadium in London, marking the largest venue the company has ever played. In addition, Critical Role is expanding its reach with a subscription service, Beacon, priced at $5.99 a month for exclusive content and early access to events. One of the company’s most significant developments is its own tabletop RPG system, Daggerheart, set to debut in May. This new system will play a pivotal role in future video content and content expansion, providing greater creative freedom and revenue opportunities.
