Figma Unveils AI Feature for Automated Website and App Creation

BusinessFigma Unveils AI Feature for Automated Website and App Creation

Figma, a design software startup, has launched a new artificial intelligence feature aimed at automating the process of building websites and applications. The feature, named Figma Make, is designed to respond to the growing demand for “vibe-coding” tools, which transform brief written descriptions into the source code required to create websites.

This move aligns with similar initiatives from tech giants like Google and Microsoft, which have also introduced their own vibe-coding solutions. In addition, OpenAI has shown interest in the space, exploring acquisitions of startups like Windsurf and Cursor, which are involved in vibe-coding technologies.

Figma’s entry into the market with Figma Make is seen as a strategic effort to attract additional business, particularly as the company prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) after filing confidentially last month. Unlike some vibe-coding tools, which offer free tiers for light use, Figma Make is a premium service, available only to users with full subscriptions starting at $16 per person per month on an annual plan. Currently in beta testing, the feature is being rolled out to these users.

Premium subscribers, who are typically part of organizations that store design assets such as font sizes and color combinations in Figma, can benefit from Figma Make’s ability to generate code that aligns with their existing design systems. This feature sets it apart from other similar tools, such as Vercel’s v0 and StackBlitz’s Bolt.new, which cannot inherit these design systems.

Figma Make operates with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model and allows users to input existing Figma design files to generate corresponding code. The tool also features a chat box that enables users to request adjustments to drafts, with options for quick fixes like font changes available through simple drop-down menus, eliminating the need to consult the AI for minor tweaks.

Early access users have already employed Figma Make to build a variety of applications, including video games, a note-taking app, and a personalized calendar. Despite the rise of AI tools, Figma’s CEO, Dylan Field, emphasized that designers will continue to play a crucial role in shaping software development in the future.

Additionally, Figma announced the testing of another feature, Figma Sites, which converts designs into functional websites. AI-generated code support is expected to be added in the coming weeks.
