Perplexity AI in Talks for $500 Million Raise at $14 Billion Valuation

BusinessPerplexity AI in Talks for $500 Million Raise at $14 Billion Valuation

Perplexity AI is in advanced discussions to raise $500 million in funding, with a valuation of $14 billion. Accel, a venture capital firm based in Palo Alto, is set to lead the round, though the deal has yet to be finalized. This funding amount is on the lower end of the range Perplexity initially sought, with early talks in March indicating that the company was looking to raise between $500 million and $1 billion at an $18 billion valuation.

The company, which specializes in AI-driven search engines, has become a prominent player in the competitive landscape alongside tech giants like Google and OpenAI, backed by Microsoft. Perplexity’s valuation reached $9 billion in December, marking a significant increase from $3 billion in June 2024. The company generates nearly $100 million in annual recurring revenue, according to recent sources.

Perplexity AI is riding the wave of the generative AI boom that began in late 2022 with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company’s strategy includes the launch of its new AI agent web browser, Comet, which is expected to be a major step in its growth. However, Perplexity faces increasing competition in the AI search market, with notable players launching new features aimed at capturing market share.

In March, Anthropic introduced a web search product that enables its chatbot, Claude, to deliver real-time search results for select users. OpenAI also launched a search feature within ChatGPT, positioning it as a strong competitor in the AI-driven search market. Additionally, Google has incorporated AI Overviews into its search results, though the feature faced criticism for significant errors shortly after its release.

Despite these challenges, Perplexity continues to build momentum, focusing on its innovative AI solutions and trying to differentiate itself from other search engines and AI companies. The company’s funding round will help support its growth and the continued development of its AI technologies, ensuring it remains a key player in the rapidly evolving AI search landscape.
