BusinessBarrick Settles Newmont Dispute, Clearing Path for Year-End Gold IPO

Barrick Mining Corp. announced Monday that it has reached an agreement with rival Newmont Corp. to combine several of their North American mines, resolving a long-running dispute and setting the stage for an initial public offering of Barrick’s gold assets by the end of the year.

The deal sent the two mining giants in opposite directions. Barrick shares slid following the announcement, while Newmont’s stock climbed, reflecting divergent investor reactions to how the combination and settlement reshape each company’s North American footprint.

Under the arrangement, the companies will merge portions of their adjacent operations, streamlining assets in a region where their holdings have overlapped and long been a source of friction. The move is intended to support the planned spin-off and public listing of Barrick’s North American gold business.

Barrick has been repositioning its portfolio amid a strong run in bullion prices, which have buoyed producer valuations and encouraged corporate restructuring across the sector. Higher prices have improved the economics of a separate listing for the North American assets.

The gold price rally has been a defining feature of the market this year, with safe-haven demand driving repeated advances. Recent moves in the metal came as investors weighed geopolitical risk, a dynamic seen when bullion strengthened during a pause in U.S. airstrikes earlier in the year.

The Newmont settlement removes a key uncertainty that had hung over Barrick’s plans, giving the company clearer footing to proceed with the IPO on its stated timeline.

An initial public offering would mark one of the more significant corporate actions in the gold sector this year, carving out a standalone entity focused on Barrick’s North American production.

Both companies rank among the world’s largest gold producers, and consolidation of their overlapping operations is expected to generate operating efficiencies. The combined assets would form the backbone of the business Barrick intends to take public.

Barrick has said the listing is targeted for completion by the end of the year, though specific terms of the offering, including size and valuation, have not been detailed. Investors will be watching for further disclosures as the timeline advances.
