BusinessStripe to Buy AI Model Gateway OpenRouter in Fintech's Deeper AI Push

Stripe said on August 19 it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a developer platform that routes requests across competing artificial intelligence models. The deal extends the payments company’s reach into the market for AI model access.

OpenRouter operates as a gateway that lets developers connect their applications to hundreds of large language models through a single interface. Instead of integrating separately with each provider, developers can switch between models and compare pricing and performance from one point of access.

The acquisition gives Stripe a foothold in a fast-growing corner of the AI industry, where developers increasingly build products on top of models supplied by multiple vendors. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Stripe, valued among the largest privately held financial technology firms, has broadened its work beyond core payment processing in recent years. The company has added tools for billing, fraud prevention and business operations, and has moved to serve companies building AI-based products.

OpenRouter’s model has drawn a base of developers who want flexibility in choosing which AI systems power their applications. The platform charges for usage as requests pass through its gateway, a structure that aligns with Stripe’s transaction-based business.

The purchase places Stripe alongside other technology and semiconductor firms deepening their AI commitments through acquisition. Chipmaker AMD recently completed its purchase of a startup focused on AI inference, part of a wider push across the sector to secure position in the developing market.

For developers, the combination could tie model access more closely to billing and payment infrastructure. Stripe already processes transactions for a range of AI companies and startups, giving it visibility into how those firms charge for services built on language models.

The deal reflects the payments firm’s assessment that AI development tools sit close to its existing customer base of online businesses and software makers. By owning a model gateway, Stripe positions itself between developers and the AI providers they rely on.

Both companies are expected to detail integration plans as the transaction closes.
